Qormi Kia 56

Mellieha SVS 50

(9-20) (10-8) (15-9) (22-13)

Qormi had to seat it out against Mellieha and just kept their unbeaten league record, after the first round.

Mellieha went ahead and Qormi had no answer. The second session saw Qormi trying to make up the leeway.

It was a low-score quarter, and Mellieha managed to hold their lead. At the interval it was 28-19. After the break Mellieha suffered Qormi’s insistence, and a 10-3 run made it a closer game.

Mellieha tried to get back but Keith Scicluna continued to pour in the points. Mellieha’s late rally brought them to just a hoop down, but Simon Cauchi settled the matter with his freeshots in the dying moments.

Qormi: 23 Keith Scicluna, 12 Antoine Grech

Mellieha: 14 Graham Coleiro

Referees: Stephen Micallef, Mark Camilleri

Floriana 64

Mosta 51

(14-5) (16-14) (13-17) (21-15)

Floriana progressed to their second win, leaving Mosta winless at the end of the first round. The Greens included Robert Depasquale and Jeffrey Sciberras, both being away from the court for some time.

Mosta were swamped at the start, suffering baskets until they recovered with an Oliver Sammut trey, but they were hit heavily again in the second session, being 8-30 down.

After the break Mosta put in their treys to advance steadily, as Floriana couldn’t coordinate their play and saw their opponents gaining ground, but in the final quarter the Greens put in a sprint, and a 9-0 run midway through the session eased their minds, notwithstanding Oliver Sammut’s treys.

Mosta couldn’t get near enough and Floriana romped home, as three teams are now two games away from leaders, Qormi. These are Floriana, Mellieha and Suns.

Floriana: 17 Michel Curmi, 13 Roberto Formosa

Mosta: 16 Oliver Sammut

Referees: Carlo Farrugia, Alfred Carbonaro
