Malta Independent Wednesday, 22 December 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Rabat Ajax obtained their first victory this season when on the ninth day of the competition, they beat St Venera Lightnings 2-1 who, on their part, scored their first goal since they started taking part in women’s football.

This match was keenly contested and balanced, though Rabat were superior to their opponents.

Rabat opened the score in their first real attack, Lorita Debono beat St Venera goalie Elaine Brincat with a low shot.

On 27 minutes, St Venera equalised when after a defensive lapse, the ball went to Claire Ciappara who lobbed into an untenanted net as Rabat goalie Christine Galea was out of position.

In the second half, Rabat were more menacing and deserved taking the lead on 73 minutes with Maria Gibson flicking into the net after some confusion in the St Venera area. It proved to be the winner.

In the second match, Melita beat Mosta 3-1.

For Melita, Ingrid Vassallo was returning to the side after an absence of three seasons.

Melita took the lead on the 26th minute. It was Vassallo who beat Karen Camilleri with a low shot.

The second goal was scored by Oriana Bedingfield on a Vassallo pass. And the third arrived when Mosta stopped for an inexistent offside and Kelly Agius Pace advanced unhindered to beat Camilleri.

In the second half, Mosta managed to reduce the arrears with a goal from Jane Coates, direct from a freekick.

Standings: Hibs, Birkirkara 15 points; Melita 12; Mosta 6; Raiders, Rabat A. 3, St Venera L. 0.

Top scorers: Kathleen Saliba (Hibs), Rebecca D’Agostino (Birkirkara) 10; Jane Coates (Mosta), Sarah Caruana (Hibs) 7.
