While reading the letter by Blair L. Foltner (TMID, 17 December) regarding opposition leader Alfred Sant’s idea about depreciating the Maltese lira, I could not help thinking about the contradictions it contained.
Mr Foltner stated that Dr Sant will confiscate millions of liri from the Maltese.
May I therefore ask Mr Foltner if he thinks the American government is confiscating the US citizens of billions of dollars if the dollar keeps sliding?
May I also ask Mr Foltner if he considers the Japanese government will also be confiscating billions of yen from the Japanese, as they have already said that if the dollar keeps sliding at its current rate, they will be selling the yen. I am sure Mr Foltner knows that selling yen on the world markets will have the same effect as depreciation, since the yen’s exchange rate will go down.
