Best And worst media moments of 2004

Malta Independent Tuesday, 4 January 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

I do not know whether Marisa Micallef Leyson is a teetotaller like myself or whether she had one drink too many during the festivities when she wrote Best and worst media moments of 2004 (TMID 27 December).

I have to set the record straight in case people actually believe that what she thought were the best and worst media moments of 2004 were the truth with regard to Maltese personalities.

In my opinion, the best and worst media moments of 2004 were:

Most embarrassing media moment: Eddie Fenech Adami resigns as Prime Minister to be appointed President.

Most shocking media comment: that of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, when she said that she had wept for the 17-year-old who got a life sentence in prison for murdering a famous hairdresser. If her reaction for a killer was endless tears, I wonder what her reaction was when Mother Teresa died?

Worst media moment for President Fenech Adami: my, my, my, how conveniently Marisa Micallef Leyson forgets how Dr Fenech Adami had to fork out Lm2,000 from his own pocket in order to pay Dr Alfred Sant for the defamation of the latter’s character on the eve of referendum day.

Worst, worst, worst moments for the PN in general: those who suffocated us with EU membership had two candidates elected as MEPs, while the Labour party rocked the PN’s boat by electing three.

Saddest media image (I still wash in my tears every morning): the resignation of John Dalli as Finance Minister.

Worst gaffe of the year: Harry Vassallo said that only the presence of Dr Sant gives Dr Gonzi the chance of a second term. That may be so but when will dearest Harry ever get the chance to govern when Harry belongs to an alternative that actually offers no alternatives?

Worst media moment from Dr Lawrence Gonzi: Ma naghtux kaz il- qrid (we are not taking any notice of grumblers).

Best media moment for Dr Sant: again his libel victory against Dr Fenech Adami. Sadly, Lm2,000 is not enough compensation.

Dear Marisa, please do your homework correctly when you write about the best and worst media moments of 2005. I have no doubt that in the coming year you’ll have lots of wretched media moments to write about – and all cut from the same blue cloth. Happy New Year.
