Local Football – massive boost for Valletta

Malta Independent Thursday, 6 January 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

City executive vice-president Paul Spiteri told The Malta Independent that Oretan, now living in Germany, had agreed to the conditions laid down by Valletta, which were absolutely not the same conditions the Nigerian had requested before he had departed prior to last season.

Oretan’s arrival will be a massive boost for the citizens who are in a very strong challenging position, not only for a top six place in the second phase of the championship, but also for the title.

The citizens have been labelled as the revelation side of the season as coach JJ Aquilina has managed to build the right equilibrium around the experience of striker Gilbert Agius, goalie Sean Sullivan, central defender Massimo Grima and Bulgarian midfielder Milen Penchev.

Oretan had left the island with a knee injury, but he is now claiming that he is 100 per cent fit. In fact, he has to undergo a medical test before signing for Valletta.

It is not known when Oretan will be arriving in Malta, but he could land at Gudja International Airport today, or perhaps tomorrow. Spiteri said it will be almost impossible to include him tomorrow for the match against St Patrick. In all probability, Oretan would play his first match against Marsaxlokk on Saturday 15 January.

Meanwhile, Spiteri also confirmed that Jaroslav Marx will be 100 per cent fit by next week, although it was also possible, though rather difficult, for coach Aquilina to include him in the squad for tomorrow’s match against St Patrick.

Marx, who should be available from the start for the match against Marsaxlokk next week, has been out of the side for a lengthy period through injury and his return at this particular moment, continues to boost the citizens.
