Malta Independent Friday, 7 January 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Marsa snatched a dramatic equaliser against San Gwann to catch up with Mqabba at the top of the First Division League. The match was very interesting with both sets missing some key players like Eviparker for Marsa and Zammit Fava and Saliba for San Gwann.

San Gwann had to play for long strtetches with a man less, and they even ended up with nine players as tempers flared as Marsa obtained their equaliser in the 91st minute.

The result can be considered a fair one, even though looked set for an important win, thanks to solid defence and hard work in midfield.

The first half was keenly contested with San Gwann showing the better ideas.

After only seven minutes San Gwann took the lead when Wilfred Spiteri scored direct from a freekick from 25 metres, giving goalkeeper Spiteri no chance to save.

However Marsa obtained the equaliser three minutes later when Jospeh Casha nipped in to score following a chaotic move insidde the San Gwann penalty area. This was a good patch for Marsa and Casha went very close to score his second goal but his lob went over the bar.

On 16 minutes San Gwann again took the lead when Karl Sciberras gave a good ball to Mark Psaila who first timed beautifully in the corner of the net for a very well taken goal.

Marsa’s reaction was an immediate one but San Gwann’s defence blocked Marsa’s attacks. Marsa had a golden opportunity to obtain the equaliser in the 36 th minute when a Jean Paul Zammit cross was handled by Cuschieri and referee Pisani awarded the penalty, but from the penalty spot Lee Grima’s feeble shot was blocked by Bartolo.

Just before the break Marsa goalkeeper Spiteri effected his best save off a Loughborough long range shot.

In the second half Marsa introduced Gilbert Martin, and they received an added boost in the 61st minute when San Gwann captain Mark Psaila was sent off following his second book-able offence. Marsa took control of the match and attacked for long stretches but the San Gwann defence stood out and kept back the Marsa pressure. That was until the 91 st minute though when Joseph Casha scored the dramatic equaliser following a Martin cross.

Following this goal Marsa’s Alan Mifsud and the San Gwann goalkeeper came to blows and were sent off by referee Pisani
