Spartans Back in the hunt

Hamrun S 2

St George’s 0

Hamrun Spartans, who played for 30 minutes with a man less, easily disposed of St George’s with a goal in each half to get back in the hunt for the promotion race.

Hamrun, playing their first match without Mauro Brincat who joined Floriana in the January transfer window, were certainly superior, and their victory was a deserved one.

Ryan Fenech and Evano Briffa, incidentally Hamun’s scorers, were surely their best players, together with Magri Overend and Kevin Borg.

Hamrun had an impressive start dominating their opponents and creating good scoring opportunities.

On 12 minutes Ryan Fenech missed a sitter in front of goal following a bad sortie by the Saints’ goalkeeper Gatt.

However two minutes later, Ryan Fenech made amends when he scored from ten metres following a well executed move by the Spartans. Six minutes later Hamrun went close to scoring their second goal but Gaetan Spiteri’s header hit the crossbar with Gatt completely beaten.

Following this, St. George’s started to play better, taking hold of the midfield sector, with Brincat and Delia doing a lot of dirty work. Ewurun effected some good runs that created havoc in the Spartans’ rearguard. Cordina was on the alert saving an Ewurun cross, and Brincat failed to connect in front of goal a Sevasta cross from the right.

In the second half the Saints continued to dictate matters with the Spartans controlling well in defence and operating on counter breaks. Gaetan Spiteri had a good opportunity but was denied by Gatt. In the 60th minute Hamrun were reduced to ten players when Spiteri was sent off for dissent.

The Saints increased the pressure in search of the equaliser but only went close with a long range shot by Grech that was blocked by Cordina.

On 70 minutes Hamrun hit the upright through Ryan Fenech following a fast break by Sadowski on the left. However six minutes later Hamrun sealed the issue when Evano Briffa finished off in style another counter attack by Sultana and Fenech.

St George’s went close in the dying minutes when a Thomas header was cleared off the line by Slavchev.
