Dear LIFE

Malta Independent Sunday, 16 January 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

From Dr E. D. Bezzina LL.D.

The tsunami experience has shown (if ever there was an event that needed to emphasise this) how we all cling, and cling in a ferocious way to dear LIFE. Remarks pitying those who were killed or died as a result of the tsunami and seaquake became a byword; thousands of people of various faiths either questioned the existence of God or why He permitted such horrendous occurrences!

All this in reality indicates man's egotistical tendency; he does not realise that as man came from nothing, man has no right to assume that he has an unlimited time here on Mother Earth, or anywhere else for that matter – in the vastness of the universe or in the cosmos. Because in reality man, next to nature, and in comparison to the universe or the cosmos, is not even insignificant, he is practically nothing in his insignificance to the might of nature or the vastness of the universe or the infiniteness of the cosmos!

Man has not learnt that he is on Planet Earth only to fulfil a divine purpose, that he is part and parcel of such divine purpose! That is why, therefore, in each and every man there is a spark of divinity if only man were to realise this. But very often he does not, or very often he is manipulated to believe that divinity is reserved for some institutions or individuals who in centuries of history have done nothing except attempt to manipulate and hoodwink the masses!

Man will only find a solution as to his existence on this planet called Earth by observing and going back to nature: we in this tiny country, this tiny speck in Europe almost insignificant compared to the rest of Planet Earth, an utter nothingness in the universe or the cosmos, have become the epitome of materialism, with the inner circles of the circles wanting to absorb all for themselves to be able to reign supreme over the masses, a situation that regrettably keeps repeating itself; or better still we are attempting to emulate a situation that already exists in so many other countries, in other continents, not least Europe to which we belong.

That is why we all appear to cling so much to dear LIFE, which in reality means nothing if we do not live every moment and dedicate every moment to help others, to live for the sake of others, to defuse what one knows in the interest of society, which will allow each and every individual to live comfortably together with his/her family. There is room for each and everyone of us if we stop trying to manipulate nature because nature will in turn reply angrily, as it has done time and again, showing insignificant man who the real lord and master of Planet Earth is, in the universe and in the cosmos, a collection we may refer to as God!

If we accept that this is the reality of our existence on Planet Earth, as part of the universe and as an insignificant tiny particle in the cosmos, then we do not have to blame God for nature's reverberation to what may have been caused by none other than the abuse and insignificance of tiny man!
