As a true lover of the Maltese language, once again I feel duty-bound to point out its massacre by both radio and TV presenters.

Apart from knowing how to speak the language correctly themselves, they should ensure that guests in their programmes speak Maltese fluently before they are invited and if not, they should not be invited at all.

By speaking improper Maltese they are causing irreparable damage to listeners, especially to children.

I appeal to the Broadcasting Authority to impose a fine on programme presenters and guests alike who speak in English when they could do so well in Maltese.

She really showed that she knows nothing about languages. But apart from that, it seems to me that this regular correspondent wants us to return to the past when the Maltese language was disregarded while Italian was used as our official language in all our institutions, including our courts. This time, Marisa Micallef just wants to substitute Italian with the English language.

With regard to the requirement of Maltese for entry into our university, may I ask Ms Micallef how professional people like lawyers, doctors, architects, and notaries can communicate with their clients if they do not know the native language thoroughly. Is it not shameful to read Maltese lawyers’ correspondence full of grammatical mistakes?

Once professionals practise their profession in Malta it is logical that they should know the language of the inhabitants of these islands.
