If changes proposed by the MFA for the local leagues are approved, a new format will be adopted as from season 2006/2007 with next season, 2005/2006, being a year of transition.
The council on Thursday evening discussed at length a proposal which, it hopes, will revamp local football. In fact, it concerns all the local leagues from the Premier to the third division.
The proposal says that the Premier Division will be made up of eight teams who will be playing against each other on a three-round basis. Each team will therefore play 21 matches.
Only one team will be relegated while the seventh team in the Premier League will be playing a series of play-offs against the second team in Division 1.
The First Division will be made up of 10 teams and this league will be played on a two-round basis with each team playing 18 matches.
The Second Division will be made up of 12 teams playing on a two-round basis with each team playing 22 matches.
The Third Division will be made up of the remaining teams. Depending on the number of teams, the current format could be retained or teams could be divided into sections.
