Still Living in the remote past

Malta Independent Tuesday, 25 January 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Mr Giovanni DeMartino loves living in the remote past. He certainly has a selective memory that is triggered according to his partisan interests. In a letter (TMID 22 January) he seems to be irritated by the fact that the MUT is currently protesting against the budget measures because no doubt they have been imposed by his beloved party in government.

He implies that they shouldn’t protest at all and reminds MUT of the unfortunate happenings of more than 20 years ago under a Labour administration. He goes as far as to declare that “…with a Labour government they will certainly not be in a position to protest – neither in the streets nor elsewhere.”

He conveniently forgets that in 1996 Labour led by example and not only allowed the organisation of mass protests but refrained from resorting to vindictive and politically-motivated transfers in the public sector, a fact currently

occurring at the expense of Labour

sympathisers.

I shudder to think of that infamous demonstration led by the KSU in 1998 with those quasi-fascist placards of Evarist Bartolo flying high. But we all know that Mr DeMartino is incapable of objective reasoning.
