Sue Abela (bowling)

Won the individual Mediterranean Challenge gold medal in the women’s doubles with her sister Melissa Anastasi and won gold in the All Events in the same championships. Was a member of the team that finished second in the Mediterranean Challenge and third in the Malta Open as well as second in the national championship.

Melissa Anastasi (bowling)

Won a women’s doubles gold medal with her sister Sue Abela in the Mediterranean Challenge and finished fifth in the individual category, She also won the silver medal with the team at the same event and bronze in the All Events. Was a member of the team that finished second in the Mediterranean Challenge. She also won the national championship and the Mediterranean Challenge qualifying tournament.

Lisa Camenzuli (tennis)

She won the national championship and other local tournaments. Was a member of the Maltese Federation Cup team where she finished unbeaten in the matches she played. She also took part in the doubles with the national team both at home and abroad.

Angela Galea (swimming)

Took part in the Athens Olympic Games and won five events in the national championships organised by the ASA. She set up a national record in the 1,500 metres freestyle. Also took part in the Malta international meeting where she finished first on three occasions and once in second place. Finished in eighth place in the 100m butterfly in the Coppa Italia and was second twice in an international meeting in Germany.

Maria Mifsud Bonnici (triathlon)

Took part in the championships held in MidSussex, Worthing and Bournemouth in England. She won the national championship, set up a national record in the championship for Small Nations which were held in Cyprus where she also finished in second place on an individual basis. Was first in her category in the Tri Esporta Crawley Triathlon Club event and second overall. Won several events held in Malta during the past year.

Voting to select the finalists for next Saturday’s final evening in the 45th edition of the National Sporting contests, organised by the Sportswriters Association, is going on and of the 80 eligible members in 2004, 90 per cent have already voted their preferences. Voting closes on Thursday 27 January.

This year’s edition will be the first in a series of activities to commemorate the 35th anniversary since the association’s foundation. This year, the association is also presenting an official recognition to a veteran sports journalist who, during the past 35 years, was instrumental in fostering the development of sports journalism in the interest of sport in Malta. The winner of this award will be announced on Saturday.

The event is being held at the SAS Radisson BayPoint Resort in St Julian’s.

The evening will be presented by Josef Bonello and Antonella Vassallo and is to be transmitted live on NeT TV.
