(waterpolo)

He was re-elected to the LEN Bureau, a post he has been occupying for the last 10 years. In February he organised the LEN Bureau in Malta and was totally behind Malta’s bid to stage the European junior championships which were organised in Malta. He was also the event’s organising committee chairman. He also represented LEN at a tournament in Portugal, the European Synchronised swimming championships in Madrid and the Short Course swimming championship in Vienna.

Envic Galea (judo)

He was elected secretary general of the European Judo Union after having occupied the post of Director of Sport within the same union for several years. He is also a member of the Educational Commission in the International Judo Federation. Was re-elected president of the Maltese Judo Association, a post he has held for a large number of years. Recently he was also re-elected as one of the MOC’s directors.

Charles Mifsud

(weightlifting)

He was still nominated as a finalist despite having passed away a few weeks ago. He was president of the Association and was instrumental in the organisation in Malta of the Commonwealth Championships. He was the organiser of the Malta Championship as well as other local competitions. He was an international judge within the World Weightlifting Federation.

Dr Joe Mifsud (football)

He was re-elected as MFA president for another three-year term. He was also successful in being re-elected to the UEFA Executive Committee for a two-year term. He acted as a mediator on behalf of the world football body, FIFA, and sits on various UEFA commissions.

Peter Valentino (sailing)

He was a member of the international jury during 2004. In October he was appointed first president of the Malta Optimist Dinghy Association and in the Athens Olympics, he was appointed by the organising committee as team leader in the Sailing Technical Committee. He also attended events in Dubai, Garda, Barcelona, France, Croatia, Ecuador, Spain and in Malta (Middle Sea Race) where he was a member of the jury.

He was also elected to the Committee of the International Optimist Dinghy Association after being proposed by Malta and Britain.

The organising committee of the contests has selected the following personalities to announce the various winners during next Saturday’s finals night at the SAS Radisson Hotel BayPoint Resort:

Sportsman of the Year: Jesmond Giordemaina, winner of the same award in 1990 and official of the Year for 2001.

Sportswoman of the Year: Helen Asciak, winner of the same award in 1977, and considered as the best woman player in Malta of all time.

Official of the Year: Louis Micallef, winner of the award in 1979, a former secretary general of the Malta Basketball Association and an assistant general secretary of the Malta Football Association.

Team of the Year: Victor Scerri, winner of the Official of the Year award in 1981 when he was Malta national football coach. A former president of the Malta Football Coaches Association.

Under 17 athlete: Jean Paul Fleri Soler, for several years a finalist in these contests. Represented Malta in three Olympic events, among other competitions.

Athletes with a disability: Joseph Micallef, a great local and foreign sport enthusiast despite being blind.
