Biased Views

Malta Independent Saturday, 29 January 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Marisa Micallef’s opinion-piece The rise and rise of anger and arrogance (TMID 24 January) is an example of bottom-of-the barrel hypocrisy in our propaganda-laden media.

She criticises peddlers of opposition propaganda, while going to new depths with her own biased views.

Most disturbing, she demonises non-PN voters and hints that we should fear for our safety in the presence of those who do not share her views.

Her grudging praise of easily implemented improvements al Sant’Antnin, carried-out under a Labour government, is a feeble attempt at appearing to be balanced in her

commentary.

The story of Sant’Antnin under a PN government is a comedy of errors. People’s anger at the past, and distrust of the latest proposals, is not the response of a mindless, roused rabble. It is a perfectly understandable reaction.

It is ludicrous that Ms Micallef expects people without a seat in Parliament to keep their mouths shut about it. This opinion exposes the truth of Ms Micallef’s vision of a PN-governed Malta.

Is this not the same Ms Micallef who advised your readers that there was no point electing Arnold Cassola to a seat in the European Parliament, because “he was already there” (in his role as secretary-general of the European Greens)? This is blatant hypocrisy and unacceptable double standards.

According to Ms Micallef, Bondiplus has demonstrated the reality of the government’s marvellous plans for Sant’Antnin. This is akin to claiming that Dr Alfred Sant has been exposed, on NET TV, as being unfit to be the next Prime Minister.

Although entitled to an opinion, Ms Micallef has finally managed to destroy what little was left of her credibility as a journalist.

Finally, I regret that the editorial staff of The Malta Independent deserves some criticism for allowing Ms Micallef such a regular platform.
