No Threat at all

Malta Independent Saturday, 29 January 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

In his letter entitled A threat? Or just arrogance? (TMID 27 January) Andrew Cassar does not seem to know what a threat is! He should check his facts before making ridiculous statements.

I was present at the Marsascala public meeting. The residents are being presented with a fait accompli. This is

unacceptable and makes a mockery out of the democracy the PN supposedly stands for.

What Alternattiva chairman Harry Vassallo emphasised was that it is arrogant of the government to say that it will go ahead with the project without

seeking to convince the people of Marsascala. How can these people be expected to endorse a project when they have suffered 12 years of stench at the hands of the Nationalist government? The Sant’Antnin plant is another project showing the carelessness of the government and another case of money down the drain. This is what should worry Mr Cassar: the waste of taxpayer’s money and the mismanagement of public funds.

How can the people trust a government which has surprisingly discovered the dangers of dioxins because it suited its propaganda purposes, but is still allowing dioxins to spew out of the hospital incinerator to threaten the health of the people of Pieta and Guardamangia? How can the people trust a government which promised the closure of Marsa power station a decade ago? How can the people trust a government which came up with the comic and ridiculous idea of building landfills near Mnajdra? Do we not remember the government assuring us that there were no other options to the Mnajdra landfills?

All these facts give a clear indication of what the PN stands for these days: untrustworthiness and the arrogance of presenting people with a fait accompli and expecting everyone to bow his or her head in deference.

Ralph Cassar
