It was surprise news of sadness that struck me on my return from a holiday abroad. Bertie, as friendly christened, was an outstanding personality who manifested a picture of long-life full of zest, and to me he seemed to personify the ultimate surviving protagonist in a theatrical journey. Vigilant perception and determination of personality rewarded him with a long and reputable career.
It is my privilege to pay tribute to a departed civil servant who was my superior at the Registry Office of the Treasury Department. He maintained very good relations with the employees and created a happy ambience that won him great respect and esteem.
I valued his clever debates, appreciated his advice and admired his willpower. I associated him with the great statesman Benjamin Disraeli who observed that “the secret of success is consistency of purpose”.
This sound philosophy was illustrated in his personal and professional vocation. He never stopped. In 1948 he was selected to undergo a two-year course of studies in taxation at the London School of Economies. His academic profession and dedication to higher assignment endorsed him the position of Commissioner of Inland Revenue. He was appointed Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and Customs in 1971 and his retirement in the high position of Administrative Secretary depicted his proficient achievements.
His name is synonymous with the theatre. His sterling qualities were a platform in the theatre sphere. He was the secretary to the Committee of Management of the Knightshall Theatre and played an active role in the acquisition and rehabilitation of the Manoel Theatre. This gem of a theatre he adorned with his genius and love and put it on a pillar of national culture. During his chairmanship, the Manoel Theatre came to life crowned with unique luster, and to its extension and fruition, I bear witness during my tenure of office at the theatre.
His success in the “theatre” orbit was even intensified when he stepped in a bigger arena of theatrical representations at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. Innovations and grandeur were the theme of the new Stage. “Theatre-goers” supported his creations wherever! They identified accomplishment.
When duty prevailed, he never failed. His commitment and enthusiasm to any given role proved time and time again Disraeli’s wisdom vested in the execution of his administration to a venerable age.
My great respect goes to a person who always offered me support in dismal moments. Sincere condolences to the family. A prayer is solicited from all friends.
