In Defence of animals

Malta Independent Monday, 7 February 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

I was really shocked to read in the local media that the Animal Welfare Council will be putting a plan into action to kill, or put to sleep (which sounds so much nicer!) all strays on the island.

Is this the only way we can control the stray population –by using our superiority over these defenceless and dumb creatures?

What about a national campaign for the neutering of such strays? Many of them are well looked after by feeders and animal lovers who make their life easier after they have been abandoned by their loving masters! Sic!

This is a decision of people who have no feelings for animals and are not designed to be on a council which should have animal welfare at heart.

Surely the AWC can do better than this. What would St Francis of Assisi and St Martin de Porres do, were they to visit our country and have a tête-à-tête with the AWC?

Come on, AWC, show us you care for these poor creatures and do not just turn a blind eye to their threatened existence!
