For today’s youth, the name Anita Baker may not ring any bells; they may even mistakenly dismiss her as another upcoming R’n’B wannabe. For the 30+ generation however, Anita represents a different, some may even call it special, space and time in what is now commonly referred to as urban groove. It was a time when the genre was intensely focused on soul music layered with sensual grooves and smooth, silky vocals. It was a time when, despite only having a handful of albums to her name, Anita Baker ruled!

Her latest outing, her first in 10 years, finds her in top form, still belting out lush grooves topped with that flowing voice of hers. Seemingly unaffected by the changes in soul circles over the years, the 10 songs on offer here move along a more traditional vein, relying heavily on Anita’s delivery for essence. My Everything is basically a laid-back record, something to slip on in the background for a romantic evening in. There is no track that really stands out above the rest here (bar the jazzy reprise of the opening track), but this doesn’t mean that the album doesn’t sparkle - it means that it sparkles all the way through!
