What is the common factor between Michael Falzon, former Nationalist Minister, Parliamentary Secretary Frans Agius, former Marsa mayor Frank Zammit, PN president Victor Scerri, former PN candidate Marisa Micallef Leyson and PN candidate and Marsascala councillor Michael Mercieca?
No, not that they are all true blue – That is obvious. The common factor which binds them together, at least where Lawrence Gonzi’s manoeuvre concerning the local councils elections at Zejtun and Marsa was concerned, is their importance of being earnest.
Their maximum criticism was towards the man at the helm who went to such lengths to deprive the residents at Zejtun and Marsa the right of every decent citizen: the right to vote. The charismatic Michael Falzon did not mince his words on Super One Television on 10 February.
Quote: “I do not agree with the decision taken by the PN to withdraw any candidates who wanted to contest the elections in Zejtun and Marsa. If the decision were mine to take, I would not have resorted to this and I would have done it in a more intelligent way.”
Parliamentary Secretary Frans Agius was more specific: “I am inclined to be more against than in favour with the decision taken by the PN to eliminate any candidates contesting the elections in Marsa and Zejtun. It would have been a better choice if PN parliamentarians which were elected in the localities of Zejtun and Marsa were consulted first about the matter”.
Dr Victor Scerri was not straight to the point: “It could be that I don’t understand certain things. Today I can say that this decision was taken and I myself do not agree with it.”
Now Marisa Micallef Leyson’s revelation about what she felt is something that should go down in the Guinness Book of Records. Here is what she said: “The decision taken by the PN to withdraw the candidates nomination in Marsa and Zejtun was a bad move, a bad decision such as the decision taken by the PN for Eddie Fenech Adami to be President of Malta. Those that run the PN could do with a large dose of humility and start to notice their supporters because they need them”.
The words of Michael Mercieca and Frank Zammit practically run along the same lines. I will not strike below the belt and say that these people made the Labour Party very happy, although there is no doubt they did.
Even they might come to realise that Lawrence Gonzi is shooting himself in the foot and what is worse, he is shooting others’ feet so that they may go down with him. Long live the “Six Team” who had courage enough and were big enough to call a spade a spade.
