The Confusion this nation is in

Malta Independent Wednesday, 23 March 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

I do not enjoy commenting like this but, above all, neither do I enjoy seeing these things happen in my country and say nothing, I cannot; perhaps some day there will be a change and someone at the end of the chain of command will say that’s enough.

Three episodes happened which left citizens guessing whether this nation has got some responsible authority who governs. A couple of weeks ago, I read about the power failure in parts of Naxxar; somebody traced the fault at T’Alla u Ommu. To repair the fault the road had to be dug up and, to do so, Enemalta requested the permission of the Malta Transport Authority. ADT refused. I do not know for how long residents were left without power while these two giants fought it out.

The other is the gas shortage. This left the whole island without gas in the middle of the coldest winter in ages. At least, Enemalta apologised – if I am correct – but the minister pointed to the bad weather.

Now I read about the parking scheme which the St Julian’s local council introduced on a trial basis in Paceville. The business community did not like it. The ADT insisted that the scheme which the local council introduced is not in force.

I do not believe much in local councils but since they are there I cannot see why the ADT should interfere about parking in an area under the jurisdiction of an elected council.

In all these episodes, these were left to fight out between themselves, with the supreme authority hiding and the population suffering.
