Making It in the US of A

Malta Independent Sunday, 27 March 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

From Mr C. Camilleri

Peter Montebello, after expressing his contempt for the USA ended his letter thus. ‘I would never live in such a free country’ (TMIS, 20 March)

Statistics show that millions of emigrants from all over the world have settled in this country of opportunities and many more would like to do the same given the chance. These include hundreds of Maltese who, like many others, have made a good name for themselves.

A person in the USA is not free if he has money but is free to make money if he is willing to work hard. In the USA it is what you know that counts and not whom you know. Perhaps this does not go down well with your correspondent.

The fact that two consecutive Secretaries of State of humble origin made it to that high office contradicts all that your correspondent wrote.

Peter Montebello can be assured that the USA can do without people of his ilk.

Charles Camilleri
