Cycling Tour Set to start tomorrow

Malta Independent Wednesday, 6 April 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

While the Maltese cyclists have honed their abilities, the foreign cycling teams have started to arrive at the Tour headquarters, the Marina Hotel in Sliema.

The first race will actually take place tomorrow and it will be preceded by the detailed technical meeting of the teams’ captains. The fourth and final one is on Sunday which sees the close of the event at the Sliema Ferries.

The organisers wish to appeal especially to the Maltese public to carefully respect the traffic warnings necessary in connection with this four-morning event. The roads used for the races and their approaches will be clearly marked and guarded both by traffic wardens and by a host of Race Marshalls wearing distinctive Yellow bibs. Once the cyclists are through, the roads will immediately be re-opened to the public and normal traffic. However everyone (young and older) should contribute that extra personal attention because it would be a pity if such grand organisation is marred by any accident, however small.

The Malta Police have also issued a special appeal to all motorists and pedestrians to take extra care during the relatively short time that the races will need to have sole access to these roads.
