A Tricky parking ticket

Malta Independent Sunday, 17 April 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

From Ms F. Dalton

I got a parking ticket because I parked in a “non-parking bay”(so I have been told) near the swings in Rabat.

I asked the warden (who happened to be there when I returned to the car) why he had given me a ticket when I was parked in a “parking bay”. His reply was that it was “non-parking bay” and the car was obstructing a ramp. He had to come round and show me where the ramp was as I had never noticed it.

I would like to draw the attention of other readers to this as it is a very sneaky and easy way for the wardens to hand out a parking ticket.

You do not realise that the markings on the ground (which are very faded) are for three cars to park and not for four. You automatically assume that this is a four-bay parking area. There are no yellow lines on the ground or any signs to indicate that there is a ramp.

As I felt that it was a very unfair and tricky parking fine I decided to contest it but to no avail, my protests fell on deaf ears.

I would like to suggest to the Mdina local council to buy a tin of paint with the Lm10 fine I paid and repaint the white lines as they are very faded, and also to mark out the “non parking bay” in yellow paint in order to let drivers know it is not a parking bay. Of course you and I know this will never happen, as the Mdina local council is a small council with very limited funds.

The irony of it all is that I was fined for: Kontravenzjoni ta’ sinjal tat-traffiku. What sign? My whole point exactly!
