A Detailed and updated guide to The Three Cities

Malta Independent Tuesday, 19 April 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Publishers Enterprises Group (PEG) Ltd of San Gwann have recently published a book entitled The Three Cities – Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua by John Manduca.

This is the third publication in the Welcome Travel Guide series.

The Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua are citadels of the Knights: hidden treasures, which are being re-discovered.

The waterfront-marina at Vittoriosa is a gem, and the fortifications encircling the whole area, which is known as Cottonera, are unique. The miles and miles of massive bastions, forts and fortifications have yet to be fully appreciated.

Lapping the blue waters of Grand Harbour, The Three Cities – all walled towns – were prime targets during the Great Siege of 1565, and again during the Second World War, when Britain and Malta fought side by side. They suffered heavy damage, and many precious buildings and treasures were lost forever.

But much remains for our pleasure and enjoyment.

The Inquisitor’s Palace, the Maritime Museum, the churches in the three parishes and the narrow winding streets are among the outstanding attractions covered by this handy and well-illustrated guidebook.

The Three Cities contains detailed maps and all the information necessary for a well-planned and fruitful visit to Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua by visitors and Maltese alike.

The book can be purchased from all leading bookshops. For more information telephone PEG on 2144-0083 or 2144-8539 or visit the PEG Publications Homepage: http://www.peg.com.mt
