Gozo’s Unsung heroes

Malta Independent Wednesday, 4 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Gozo branch of the Malta Red Cross Society may have had its share of the limelight in the recent disaster that came in the form of the tsunami.

They quickly stepped up to the challenge where others feared to tread. They did not do it for the glory or fame but because they felt the heart-wrenching cry for help.

Who are the Malta Red Cross Gozo Branch? No, they are not a bunch of weekend warriors who like to parade in reflective clothing. They are a group of dedicated young men and women who give up their spare time to offer services to the people of this fair Island Calypso, not to mention mainland Malta.

They are a top notch team of qualified and trained EMT B’s (emergency medical technicians), rescue team and first aiders. They also have fully equipped ambulances, with all the latest life saving equipment on board. They also believe in the fact that while the hospital is a mere 10 minutes away, their first priority is to stabilise and then transport the patient – not the pack and carry attitude that we are so familiar with.

I had the honour to witness them at the Civil Protection Department’s open weekend at Hal Far. They worked hand in hand with the CPD personnel and put on a demonstration to be proud of.

The reason behind this letter is to raise a few questions towards their plight for a headquarters in Gozo. It is understood that they have been offered a search and rescue boat, a Land Rover, mini bus, mobile kitchen, a support vehicle and various equipment by foreign entities on the proviso that they have a place to keep them.

Is the Malta Red Cross Gozo Branch a part of our nation’s disaster corps or are they only recognised beyond our shores?

Speaking of shores, why are there no life guards/first aid posts in Gozo? I would like to put forward a question to anyone concerned, how many near fatal/fatal occurrences have been reported on our beaches over the past five years? Maybe five years is too long, then let’s make it one year. Surely the amount is worthy of a post!
