First Division: Balzan relegated to Division Two

Malta Independent Sunday, 8 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Balzan 1 Mosta 2

Mosta made a bold step towards the Premiership when they beat Balzan by the odd goal in three. Mosta are now in second place and if they beat San Gwann in their last match they will be promoted.

Balzan thus suffered their second consecutive relegation and have only themselves to blame following a very disappointing season.

Mosta did the early running but had to wait till the 36 th minute to open the score when Pio Vassallo headed in from close range a Pio Scriha freekick. Three minutes later Mosta doubled the score through a Dyson Falzon solo effort.

In the second half Balzan dominated for long stretches with Mosta operating in fast breaks. Mosta¹s goalkeeper Matthew Farrugia denied Mizzi with a brilliant save but the same Mizzi scored Balzan¹s consolation goal with three minutes to go.

Senglea A 5

Naxxar L 2

Senglea kept their slim promotion hopes alive when they beat Naxxar Lions 5-2 in a highly entertaining match, with their striker Timothy Thomas their hero scoring a hat trick.

Naxxar had a good start going in the lead through Victor Ballia on nine minutes. But Senglea had a good spell around the 30th minute when they scored two goals through Thomas and Kenneth Abela.

In the second half Senglea added another one from Glenn Bonallo and Thomas notched his second goal in the 73rd making it 4-1.

League top scorer Jerry Ani scored his seventeenth of the season, reducing the arrears for Naxxar but Thomas sealed his hat trick with six minutes to go for a Senglea 5-2 victory.
