Malta Independent Tuesday, 17 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Wilson national knockout finals were held last Saturday at the Marsa Sports & Country Club.

The first two finals of the day were the team events. Here team Bugeja defeated team Rizzo with surprising ease 3-0 to take the first ever national team knockout title.

At the same time, team Calvagna fought out an incredibly close match with team Pace Grima. Although the overall result was also 3-0, the individual matches could not have been closer.

Before the main individual finals, the plate finals in the over 40s and restricted events were held.

Both matches went all the way and had the spectators on the edge of their seats, not to mention some prolonged discussions with the referees!

In the over 40s plate final, Liz Said managed to fight, claw and battle her way past George Goodall 3-2. In the restricted plate final, James Gauci Borda almost gave away a 2-0 lead before finally defeating Alex Scerri 3-2.

The main finals then followed with Rizzo versus Rizzo not only playing the restricted final but also sorting out the domestic order at home. Steve Rizzo showed who was boss this time round defeating Johanna in three close games 3-0.

In the over 40s final, Karl Grech Orr proved too strong and consistent for Karl Magri, winning comfortably 3-0.

A full day of non-stop action was followed by the presentation and after tournament party that went on until the early hours.

Malta Squash thanked the Marsa club for their efforts in providing once again an excellent venue, Wilson for supporting the event and all the helpers and organisers in the background that have worked hard over the past few weeks to make the national knockout the success it was.
