Malta Independent Thursday, 19 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

After the recent successful staging of the Malta National Championships, the activities of the local Badminton Association resumed with the Second Division fixtures of the H2Only Mixed League.

This competition has been in progress since March and is being keenly contested by the participating teams. The second division has now started its second (and final) round.

B’Kara Red Lion are still unbeaten at the top of the provisional table, with four wins and a draw on their record from the five matches played so far. Their drawn result was obtained against direct contenders and second-placed Pawla Wolves Schtag, who trail them by four points but still have a game in hand.

In their latest outing, the Lions repeated their first round score result against Shuttles BC, defeating them 3-1. Martin Farrugia, Daniel Abdilla and Rachel Attard brought home the points for the Lions; the Shuttles’ consolation point was scored by Chris Spiteri / Joanne Vella who won their Doubles game.

Pawla Wolves Schtag maintained the pace with the leaders. They have equally preserved an unbeaten record, with three wins and a draw from their four matches so far.

In their latest match, the Wolves similarly obtained the double over B’Kara Power Fruit with a clear 4-0 scoreline. Frans Vella, Edmond Abela and Oliver Mallia were the players behind this important result for the Paolites, which enabled them to remain within striking distance of the Lions.

Following these results, the second division table now reads as follows: B’Kara Red Lion 18 points; Pawla Wolves Schtag 14; Shuttles BC 8; B’Kara Jazz and B’Kara Power Fruit 4.

The activities of the Badminton Association will now continue next Sunday with another four matches, two from each division. These fixtures had been initially scheduled to be played on the morrow of the death of Pope John Paul II and were therefore postponed.

In the first division, B’Kara 1565 will face the challenge of B’Kara John Bull while Pawla Wolves Schtag taken on B’Kara Lowenbrau.

In the second division, B’Kara Power Fruit will play against B’Kara Jazz while Shuttles BC will cross swords with Pawla Wolves Schtag.
