Discoveries At Marsa

Malta Independent Friday, 27 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The news of the archaeological discoveries at Marsa reached me through the grape vine, like most of the news that is not news for the breast-beaters in our camera-aware country.

The whole episode is despicable! How can we use funds raised from taxes to destroy our heritage? Why do we bother with history and archaeology courses at our university? Where are the NGOs with their outcry? Maybe there was no PR mileage to be made from this shame?

The pity is that an example like this gives the green light for this sort of rape to our heritage. Maybe not enough has been lost to the grim reaper of progress? How can we teach and encourage our children to appreciate the treasures that are around them when we destroy all we can in the name of development?

One year in the EU has definitely not made us any more European.

The Italian president would have really enjoyed the spectacle of the destruction of a 2,000-year-old Roman port.

As long as the flags were flying and the bands where playing, who cares about the Romans?
