Romania And Malta

Malta Independent Saturday, 28 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Just a quick remark. Ms Grace Borg, chairman of the Malta Song Board said: “Just look at the countries that gave Greece 12 points (in the Eurovision Song Contest) – Turkey, Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Macedonia, Germany, Hungary, Serbia and Romania – all countries that are home to a lot of Turkish people”... (TMID 24 May).

Apart from the fact that it is unclear from what sources she derived the fact that Romania is “home to a lot of Turkish people”, it is grossly mistaken not to check the official results to realise the simple fact that Romania didn’t, in fact, give Greece 12 points.

The Romanian people credited Greece with 10 and Malta only with two, enough to make Ms Borg desperately angry, but not enough to provide an opportunity for incorrect remarks.

Maybe she did that because the telecom capabilities of Malta are beyond their counterparts in continental Europe, and she couldn’t get a chance to access the final results. But, more likely, she did this because Malta did not win.

Frustration is normal in any situation, especially when you come second in a competition.

I can understand that. But when someone has a certain responsibility, it will be better for that someone to behave in a responsible way.

Ms Borg speaks irresponsibly about Romania and as a Romanian I ask for an apology.

First of all, the telecommunication system in Romania is highly developed, with three big competitors: Romtelecom (property of OTE), Orange and Connex (Vodafone)! I guess that Ms Borg heard about those big firms!

On the other hand, according to CIA’s factbook 2004, Romania has 22,355,551 people (estimation July 2004).

Meanwhile, Malta has 396,851 (estimation July 2004, also).

I don’t know the figures, but I can bet that there were more votes from Romania than from Malta, just for the simple reason that our population is more than 56 times bigger!

And the Romanians really voted! It’s enough to consult the rating points of the show!
