Air Malta Extends its support to Malta Olympic Committee

Malta Independent Sunday, 29 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Air Malta has renewed its sponsorship and support to the Malta Olympic Committee (MOC) through an agreement signed recently between the two organisations.

This agreement paves the way for all MOC contingents at various international competitions including the Games for European Small States (Andorra 2005), the Mediterranean Games (Almeria 2005) and the European Youth Festival (Ligano 2005) to utilise Air Malta’s services.

Air Malta will be once again appointed the MOC’s Official Airline and will assist MOC in its travel related requirements. This commercial contract will further strengthen the excellent ties between the National Carrier and the Malta Olympic Committee.

In a few words after the signing Mr Joe Cappello, Air Malta’s Chief Operating Officer said, “This agreement fulfils part of the National Airline’s corporate social responsibility. It is Air Malta’s clear commitment to our community by promoting youth development through sport.”

Dr Kirill Micallef Stafrace, MOC Director of Marketing, said, “Air Malta has long been associated with the Malta Olympic Committee and in helping local sport associations and athletes to improve their level of competitiveness in the international arena.

“Aviation is an important sector for Malta and being an island it is the main means of transport connecting Malta with the rest of the world. Connecting people through Sport is an important area to consider in tourism and which has a lot of potential to be developed further from a number of areas. Local participation at international sport events is important not only for increasing our athletes’ standards but is a great opportunity to raise the profile of Malta. This can be done by helping athletes to place well and on the podium. Athletes are sporting ambassadors and wherever they go they are promoting and representing Malta; they will also have the opportunity to network with fellow sports persons and can promote and encourage people to come to Malta. At high ranking official levels, networking is a means of strengthening relations and lobby for the hosting of international conferences, seminars and competitions.
