Religious Superiors support abortion ban

Malta Independent Tuesday, 31 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Conference of Maltese Major Superiors (KSMR) believes that human life is a gift from God the Creator. He made us all His children, equal in dignity and promised a life that has no end, the conference said in a statement.

“For this reason we support the initiative of the Deputy Prime Minister, Tonio Borg, to entrench the law prohibiting abortion in the Maltese Constitution.”

The conference believed that the fundamental right to life, which is already enshrined in the Constitution, should be explicitly recognised in the same Constitution in favour of every child even before its birth, from the very first moments of its existence.

It added that this legal measure, however laudable and worthy of support, is, by itself, not sufficient to protect the dignity and sacredness of the unborn child. “Our country should offer effective help and support to those mothers and families for whom a child means a burden that they are unable to carry. This help should be offered in such a way that they do not reach the point of contemplating abortion as a solution to the difficulties that an unwanted pregnancy presents.”

Similarly, the conference urged the government to see that the new law being prepared to regulate biotechnological practices, especially related to fertility techniques, will guarantee that human life is fully protected from the very start of its development process.

While providing help in their efforts to married couples who wish to have children, “let us put first and foremost the absolute respect of the dignity and protection of both the child and its parents”.
