Malta's debut in the inaugural tournament at these Games was sad as Neville Desira suffered two and Stephen Formosa one defeat respectively.

Formosa, who had suffered a groin injury two days before the competition, was declared fit, but he had to bow out to a superior Carles Mario Rodrigues of Andorra in a 5-0 defeat in the -80kg category.

Neville Desira lost to Kenny Douala 19-8 of Monaco in the -68kg category and then also lost in the match for third place, going down 12-1 to Yuri Adran Villacieros of Andorra.

Thus Malta failed to obtain any medals in this debut for this sport in this year’s edition.
