Paul Vella In fifth place

Malta Independent Saturday, 4 June 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

Paul Vella finished in fifth place in the Skeet competition yesterday after scoring two final rounds of 22, including that in the barrage.

He had finished the qualifying round on 109 after rounds of 21, 22, 22, 22 and 22.

In the barrage, he maintained his consistency with another round of 22, but it was not enough to claim the bronze, also dropping from fourth to fifth place after missing one of the last two targets.

Antoniakis Andreou of Cyprus won the gold with 139, the silver went to his compatriot Andreas Chasikos on 137 and the bronze going to San Marino's Moreno Benedittini on 132.

At the end of the competition, Vella said he was disappointed with the outcome.

"I felt I prepared quite well for this competition and I was confident that I would be doing well. But ironically, I missed a lot on stations one and eight, while I did much better on the much more difficult station four.

Such inconsistency cost me a higher placing. I do not know yet if the MOC will select me to take part in the forthcoming Mediterranean Games.” said Paul Vella.

“They have to make the decision," he said.
