Children’s Commissioner’s Opposition

Malta Independent Sunday, 5 June 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

From Dr E. D. Bezzina

In the highly unimpressive contribution made by our despotically-appointed Commissioner for Children to our Parliamentary Social Affairs Committee, one fact glaringly stood out: what have the objectives of our Commissioner for Children to do with In-vitro fertilisation, or as we used to refer to them some years back test tube babies: TTBs?

As far as I am aware, the Commissioner for Children, a political appointment created to “emphasise” the government’s policy to also nominate women to top jobs and positions (nothing wrong with that as long as they are competent and not mix emotions with their work), has one major objective, namely to see that children are raised to be responsible citizens and that they are protected from any form of abuse. Matters relating to abortion, test tube babies, embryos, infertility, pregnancies, contraception, births, natural methods and such topics have nothing to do with the job of Commissioner for Children, or have we really gone bonkers in this country to camouflage the pitiful state of affairs practically all social strata are in?

Could not our Parliamentary Social Affairs Committee have just read the study prepared by the UK`s Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child, rather than bombastically (for political purposes, as if people are complete idiots!) exhibit the Commissioner for Children to refer to that study and then not contribute anything worth mentioning at all, let alone the prominent reportage the whole social farce undeservedly got? When will we grow up and realise that people are not the outright fools they used to be, even though we still have thousands who are gullible and swallow the nonsense pushed down their throats by “emperors not wearing clothes”?

The social cherry on top was when it transpired that in Malta we apparently have no statistics at all on the subject! Next time round, please invite competent people to illuminate us scientifically about the whole issue: who cares what the Commissioner for Children desires or whether she tried contraceptives or not – the State has a duty to cater for the individual exigencies of each and everyone of its citizens, more so now that we are European Union citizens in a pluralistic and cosmopolitan Europe: or do we keep mixing drinks in this country?
