Simon Gerada and Andrezei Makowski led home a sensational double sweep of medals as Malta finished first and second in the men's singles competition.

Malta grabbed their second table-tennis gold medal of the GSSE to complete an impressive sweep of medals, showing its dominance in this discipline.

At the end, it was Malta's number one seed Simon Gerada who won the all-Maltese final against Andrezei Makowski 11-5, 11-13, 13-11 11-8 to claim the singles title.

Earlier on, in the semi-finals, Makowski wrapped things up in four games to set up the showdown against his compatriot Gerada, cruising past De Sousa of Luxembourg 3-1 to book a place in the gold-medal game.

On his part, Gerada picked up a narrow victory after trailing two sets to Stephensen of Iceland.

For Simon, it was a case of being "third time lucky" in terms of winning a gold medal in the GSSE.

Asked about his feelings, he said: "Last month I played in the World Championship but none cares if you win or lose. It is not in the papers as nobody cares. But here is different, winning a gold medal at the GSSE was on everybody's mind".

Gerada heaped praise on his colleague Andrezei Makowski. "We had one job today, it was to take gold and silver and it did not matter who got the gold or the silver. We got the gold and silver and that is all that matters", he said.

Asked about his future commitments, Gerada said his next target is to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. "I am a Maltese living in Australia and to win a medal in next year's games would be huge for me", he ended.

Despite losing the final, Makowski was a happy man at the end of the match, confirming Gerada's thes is that the common goal was to place Malta as a dominant force in GSSE table-tennis.

"I am very happy with the silver medal. For me, the proper final was my semi-final, I am really happy for Simon. It was a friendly match between two close friends", Makowski said.

Asked about his feelings, being a Pole representing Malta, he added "I like Malta very much, I carry the Maltese flag with me everywhere I go".
