Postman Does not deliver

Malta Independent Sunday, 12 June 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

A court heard how Marco Formosa, a former postman failed to deliver 111 registered letters and 500 door to door letters during his time working with Maltapost.

Formosa worked at the Zejtun branch and the discrepancies were discovered after an inspection in April 2004.

The first witness for the prosecution was Anthony Borg, a former manager at Maltapost. Borg said that after a routine inspection at the Maltapost Zejtun branch, his assistant, Sebastian Micallef had informed him that there were a number of discrepancies between the number of registered letters posted and those on record.

Asked by the police how many letters had not been delivered and who was responsible for posting them, Borg said that 111 registered letters had not been posted and that Formosa was the postman responsible for delivering these letters.

Joseph Gafa’, Maltapost general manager, Corporate Services confirmed that Formosa had been employed as a postman in the Southern hub of the island. Gafa’ also confirmed that he had received a report after an inquiry was held and this had revealed that 500 door to door letters and 111 registered letters had not arrived at their destination.

Gafa’ said Formosa had been questioned by Maltapost’s General Manager for Operations and after a disciplinary process, it was decided that as the offence was a grave and serious one he merited dismissal. Formosa was duly fired from Maltapost after the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings, Gafa’ added

Responding to questioning by the police, Gafa’ confirmed that Maltapost had asked for a criminal investigation into the incident as it was seen as a very serious issue.

The case continues.

Presiding Magistrate: Abigail Lofaro.
