The McDonald’s Olympic Day Run

Malta Independent Monday, 13 June 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The McDonalds Olympic Day Run is once again drawing near and everyone is being encouraged to form a team and join to help promote the importance of an active lifestyle. Groups are to wear team T-shirts, thus creating a unified identity with fellow colleagues during the run.

After last year’s successful run where there were over 500 participants, the number is expected to be on the increase this year.

It will take place on 19th June 2005 (Sunday) at 8.30am in St. Julians. Participation is free of charge. The organisers are teaming up with McDonald’s who have currently launched a new initiative centered on a multi-faceted education campaign to help consumers better understand the keys to living balanced, active lives – “it’s what I eat and what I do … I’m lovin’ it.”

This sponsorship showcases McDonald`s ongoing commitment to a balanced, active lifestyle and the spirits and ideals of the Olympic Games.

As usual official Olympic Day Run T-shirts will be given to all participants including an official Olympic Day Run IOC Certificate signed by the President of the IOC, Dr. Jacques Rogge. Accordingly, applications will be readily available at any McDonald’s restaurants and through the offices of the MOC (Tel. 21332801).

This year’s route has been split into three routes, which start and finish in St. Julians (Spinola Bay car park, next to Ryan’s Irish Pub):

Fun Run for kids (up to 12 years) -2.5k

Starting line: Sliema, Tower Road (near Fond Ghadir, next to the Pier), along the front, finishing in St. Julians car park in Spinola Bay.

Fun Run for kids 13 and over -5k

Starting line: St. Julians car park, Spinola Bay, along the front, going round Joinwell showroom down High Street and back on the front, finishing at the starting line in Spinola Bay.

Olympic Day Run -10k

Starting line: St. Julians car park in Spinola Bay, along the front going down Tigne, towards the Crowne Plaza Holiday Inn Hotel, continuing along the front towards Gzira, turning round at the Paul and Rocco petrol station and back to the starting line along the front again.

This fun run will be a symbolic event uniting athletes, sporting bodies and those who believe and practise sport to help promote an active lifestyle by participating in the Olympic Day Run.
