Work on the Luqa primary school is at an advanced stage and when it opens for the coming scholastic year, the village will have a new school except for the façade which has not been demolished because of its architectural and aesthetic value. In all, Lm1 million would have been invested in the school.
Education Minister Louis Galea yesterday visited the work being carried out on the school which, by the end of the year, will have a multi-purpose hall that can also be utilised by the Luqa community after school hours.
The Luqa school was originally built in 1930. The Education Division thought it fit to expand the school to meet modern demands. As a result, more children at kindergarten level can be accommodated while the facilities for the primary school have been upgraded. The work was started by the division but passed under the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools when this was set up a few years ago.
The school had to be demolished and re-built, except for the façade. When completed, it will have 24 new classrooms, a kindergarten, new administration offices, a public library, a clinic, resource rooms, teachers’ quarters as well as music, drama, arts, crafts and science rooms.
The recreational areas are being embellished while the community hall will accommodate 300 people. An electricity sub-station is also being built nearby.
