The End of an era

Malta Independent Thursday, 16 June 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The PN are completely devastated. They are suffering one fall after another. Like a horse caught in a mousetrap, they are contemplating one attempt after another to gain the popularity they lost knowing that ultimately the battle is already lost. A mouse cannot free himself. They cannot gain freedom, freedom as in winning the next election.

It is the end of an era they see coming and it pains them to know that nothing they can do or say now will make any difference. As Carole King used to sing: It’s too late. Recent opinion polls show that Dr Alfred Sant is 51 per cent on the popularity stakes while Dr Lawrence Gonzi is a mere 48 per cent.

No wonder the PN are seeing red! No wonder that their only form of escapism is to deliver a message that there is a cold war between Dr Sant and Dr Michael Falzon, as alleged on last Sunday’s Il-Mument. A case of mudslinging because without any fortuneteller’s help they can see the end of their era.

It is indeed a bitter pill to swallow and one they find difficult to digest but there is no other way out. It is time for the curtain to fall down. It is not Dr Sant’s rare smile that will win him a colossal victory at the polls, neither is the fall of Dr Lawrence Gonzi that will automatically bring about the rise of Dr Sant. It is indeed other matters that will propel the people to vote Labour in the next election.

Matters like the General Retailers and Traders Union (GRTU) stating that our economy has turned into a state of regression instead of progression.

Matters like the small island of Gozo and a particular factory terminating the employment of 25 workers, joining the multitude of factory workers on the dole in Malta.

More matters like the crisis of 18,472 tourists less than planned during the first four months of the year.

More, more serious matters like the fact that 14,763 people are still waiting on the waiting lists for surgery in St Luke’s Hospital.

Other matters are the tsunami of taxes. The promise of manna from heaven once Malta joins the European Union, which has not arrived.

Indeed the direction the PN is taking will lead to the end of an era. Thank God.
