New Waterpolo school to open next month

Malta Independent Thursday, 16 June 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

A waterpolo school which is independent from waterpolo clubs is being set up soon. However it is the organisers’ intention to work in conjunction with any club/s and assisting them should they wish to hire their services to improve the qualities of their youngsters i.e. technique, skill etc. the organizers have made it clear that they will not be coaching any club team.

The edge on other club nurseries is that they do not have to prepare a team for the summer league but merely ensure that the necessary basic skills are learned by each individual attending the school.

Although certain clubs are doing a relatively good job with regards to nurseries, their ultimate aim is to win the summer junior competitions. The school’s motto is “Building Tomorrow’s Champions” and that is what they intend to do.

The school will cater for boys and girls aged between eight and 14 years. They do not need to be very good swimmers but children should know how to swim without any aid. At such a tender age it is very important that youngsters enjoy every moment of the training session. In fact the organisers are working on a fun packed training programme full of games and more which will increase the children’s stamina and resistance in the water. Children who practise other sports as their main activity are also welcome to participate in the waterpolo school and get a good taste of the sport.

Twenty five training sessions will be held at the National Pool Complex at Tal-Qroqq and will run from the second week in July to the first or second week in September. Sessions will be held three times a week in the morning between 9am and 10.15am and 10.30am and 11.45am.

Children will be assessed at the beginning of the course and this will give the organisers an idea on the potential of the children. At the end of the course another assessment (which will be more technical and specific) will be made and this will mark the improvement made by the children.

A certificate will be presented at the end of the course.

Children will get the opportunity to learn the game of waterpolo under the guidance of Jonathan Valletta and his experienced colleagues Silvio Borg and Julian Xuereb.

The whole 25-session course will only cost Lm45 per child. Children will be given a free swimming cap and enjoy a 15% discount when purchasing goods from the Arena Swim Shop at the National Pool Complex.

Anyone interested should contact either Jonathan Valletta on 99407016, Silvio Borg on 99832201, Julian Xuereb on 21386875 or the Arena Swim Shop at the National Pool Complex.

More information can be obtained during a promotion for the new waterpolo school which is being held at Bay Street, Paceville, next Saturday and Sunday between 4.30pm and 8pm.
