Go mobile to host GSME plenary in Malta

go mobile will be hosting the 28th plenary meeting of GSM Europe which will be held in Malta today at the Corinthia San Gorg Hotel. This is the first time that the GSME will be holding its plenary meeting in Malta.

Around 75 delegates from mobile operators all over Europe will be gathering in Malta to discuss a number of themes including the opportunities and threats to the GSM industry of 3G content. A number of working groups and subcommittees within the GSME will present reports on topics such as regulatory affairs, health and environment, frequencies and m-commerce.

“It is a great honour for go mobile to host the 28th plenary of the GSME. Apart from being a prestigious event in itself, the fact that it is being held in Malta signifies the massive development of the local mobile communications market and its recognition on the European level,” go mobile chief executive officer Prof. Juanito Camilleri said.

Prof. Camilleri will be delivering a keynote speech during the meeting. He will be discussing the challenges ahead for mobile operators in an EU pico-states like Malta. Other speakers include Kaisu Karvala, GSME chair; Julie Minns, public policy manager H3G, UK; Kari Vaihia , group director on CSR of TeliaSonera; Tina Southall, director content standards and social products group marketing for Vodafone group and Celia Falzon, chief of external relations at the Malta Communications Authority.

“This meeting will serve also as an excellent showcase for Malta. go mobile has prepared a programme of events and functions for all the European delegates so as to give them a feel of Maltese culture, culinary tradition and hospitality,” go mobile’s senior executive international affairs, Michael Balzan, said.

GSM Europe is the European interest group of the GSM association, the premier global body behind the world’s leading wireless communications standard. GSM Europe represents 143 operators in 50 countries/areas of Europe and currently serves over 454 million GSM customers.

GSM Europe is the leading representative body of the wireless industry in Europe. Through the years GSME has evolved from being a strong regulatory interest group towards being a stronger educational interest group. The mobile operator members drive the organisation and GSM Europe represents their common views and messages vis-à-vis EU officials and key stakeholders of the mobile industry.
