No Half-truths please

Malta Independent Sunday, 19 June 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

I refer to “Court Snippets” where it was stated that my wife and I were arrested by Magistrate Silvio Meli for “contempt of court” (TMIS, 12 June).

My wife and I are going through separation procedures and unfortunately our lawyers have not reached a settlement desired by both parties. On that particular appointed hearing we appeared before the court but our respective lawyers did not turn up. This seemed to have upset the magistrate who surprisingly ordered a “one hour arrest” until our lawyers turned up in court.

If your paper sees it fit to report such stupid incidents, I believe the full facts should have been reported and not half-truths. There is so much that can be said about the administration of justice which is unreported.

Let the people judge if there was any “contempt of court”. People appear in court simply because they disagree on certain issues. If the court wanted to instil some sort of fear or a warning to others through this incident, it should have admonished our lawyers, who advise us on these procedures and are paid to protect our legal right but unfortunately were not present to answer to the magistrate.
