I refer to the parliamentary report entitled Labour MP calls for investigation by Mark Micallef (TMID, 15 June).
The report states facts that are incorrect and can be misleading. It is not true that the nurse mentioned was the only one qualified for the post. Selection is not only based on the amount of qualifications but also on the interview that is given to each applicant. The Hon. Michael Farrugia is not in a position to state the outcome of such a process.
It is not true that the person in question has a specialised Diploma in Infection Control. The person in question has an English National Board (ENB) certificate from the University of Manchester equivalent to 30 (Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme) CATS credits. A Diploma in higher or specialist education is made up of 240 CATS credits – 120 at level 1 and 120 at level 2. What the Hon. Michael Farrugia stated in Parliament is far from the truth.
Furthermore, the said nurse did not work at the University of Cardiff as an Infection Control Nurse. He worked in the Infection Control Department of the University Hospital of the Wales Health Care NHS Trust for seven weeks in 1995.
In addition, it is not true that the other applicants have no experience or training in infection control. It is rather strange that the Hon. Dr Farrugia decided to speak in favour of one particular applicant basing his facts as provided to him incorrectly by an individual who may have had a vested interest in the post.
