The new Armed Forces of Malta patrol boat P61 was launched at the Fincantieri Yard in Muggiano, Italy, earlier this month. Present at the ceremony, among others, were Major C. Spiteri (AFM project officer) and Captain W. Camilleri, the new boat’s commanding officer.
The boat, which is financed in its entirety with funds from the 5th Italo-Maltese Financial Protocol, was ordered in March 2004. It has been designed to be capable of offshore patrolling in severe weather conditions, helicopter operations, launch and recovery of an interceptor craft and search and rescue (SAR) missions. P61 is 54 metres long and will displace 450 tonnes at full load.
Her 25-person crew will consist of four officers and 21 other ranks. Although designed primarily for good sea-keeping, the boat will be capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots and will have a range of over 2,000 nautical miles.
P61 will now enter a period of final outfitting. This will see major external items installed, such as the main armament, deck crane and helicopter platform equipment. The boat will then be subjected to a rigorous series of trials both alongside as well as underway.
During the same period, the entire crew will be undertaking an intense training programme to familiarise themselves with the operation and maintenance of the systems on board. P61 is expected to be ready for delivery late in the third quarter of the year.
