Not Responsible for Africa’s problem

Malta Independent Sunday, 26 June 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

From Mr A. Sciberras

I would like to congratulate Alex Pace for his excellent letter “Illegal invasion” which appeared in this newspaper a couple of weeks ago.

I can understand Mr Pace’s concerns about the growing number of illegal immigrants that are reaching our shores every summer. A few days ago it was made public that the number of refugees has now exceeded the 1,000 figure. This is unsustainable. Malta never had colonies, therefore it is not responsible for Africa’s problems.

Unfortunately, our politicians do not have the will to fight this problem. There are political parties all over Europe that are staunchly anti-immigration. The Lega Nord in Italy, the Front National in France, the Freedom Party in Austria, Gert Wilders party in The Netherlands, Vlaams Belang in Belgium, Danish People’s party in Denmark, Partido Popular Porugtuesa in Portugal and many others. All these parties are given the chance to express their views.

However in “democratic” Malta, the only person (Norman Lowell) who has spoken boldly on this issue (without using “politically correct” gimmicks) may be sent to jail for 18 months (even some drug dealers are given less). This is how we have ended up. Immigrants are entering our country and we just have to shut up, otherwise we’ll be labelled racist. This is unacceptable.

Fortunately, a group of young people is teaming up to continue what Norman Lowell started. They have a website called www.vivamalta.org. Anyone who wants to do something to stop this influx can join them. Let’s save Malta before it’s too late.

Andrew Sciberras
