Parramatta Eagles have successfully negotiated a new 21-year lease for Melita Stadium, with Parramatta City Council.

“It’s just great to secure our base for the long term, which allows us to continue with our planning for the future of our club and our football community partners” said Eagles’ president Tony Azzopardi.

In a celebration of the formal lease signing, Azzopardi was joined on Thursday by Lord Mayor David Borger, and Granville Soccer Association executives Daryl Verity and Ken Bray.

“Council is keen to foster the sport of football, and be a part of the exciting new era for the game.” said the Lord Mayor. “Parramatta Eagles is the most senior club in our area, and we look forward to working with their players, administrators, fans and the local association wherever we can, to help the growth of the world game.”

“From the first-ever recorded game between the Kings School and the Wanderers in 1880, to the formation of the Granville Association in 1902, to the present day, football (soccer) has played a significant role in the history of our region of Sydney. We recognise that role, and we are committed to maintaining a strong foundation for the sport in the greater Parramatta area.” he added.

In the light of a number of discussions being held between the Eagles and the Granville Association regarding the future of football in the area, GDSFA President Daryl Verity was also upbeat on the day.

“This is great for all members of the local football family” said Verity. “Local Government has always been a strong supporter of our game from grass roots level upwards, and we look forward to a strong relationship in the future.”

Parramatta Eagles (formerly Melita Eagles) are one of Australia’s most well-known football clubs with a proud heritage and a long list of honours. They first began playing at Melita Stadium in 1981. The ground, in Everley Road, South Granville (Chester Hill) is home for the club’s football operations and the social club which boasts over 500 members. The junior football academy is the Oceania development partner of UK giants Manchester United, and is also based at the complex.
