Golfer Andrew Borg obtained a great result in the fourth and final round of the golf tournament in Almeria, when he scored a total of 69 going 3 par under.
With this result Andrew Borg totalled a score of 307 (+19) to finish in eleventh place overall from thirty seven golfers taking part.
This was a remarkable score obtained by the Maltese golfer as he set the course record during these Mediterranean Games.
It was also the first time that a Maltese athlete managed to set a course record during the Mediterranean Games.
This was in contrast to yesterday’s poor show by Borg, a result that put him in 19th place following the third round.
However yesterday he made amends as he obtained the best result of the whole tournament going three strokes under the 72 par.
In the last edition of the Mediterranean Games four years ago, Andrew Borg finished 21st out of 25 competitors, and surely his placing yesterday is a great achievement for the local golf.
The gold medal was won by Spanish Ignacio Sanchez who obtained 290 (+2), with Frenchman Julien Grillon obtaining the silver medal with 293 (+5).
The bronze medal was won by Hakan Sayan Hamza from Turkey with 296 (+6).
Two Maltese athletes were also in action yesterday in the semi finals of the 100m. Both Jeandre Mallia and Darren Gilford finished in the last position in their heats, and in the end they had to settle for the last two spots n the competition with Gilford preceding Mallia.
In his heat Jeandre Mallia clocked 11.17 seconds, with the heat won by Italian Luca Verdecchia who obtained 10.47 seconds.
In the second het won by Greek Aristeidis Petridis, Darren Gilford clocked 10.88 seconds, very close to his personal best of 10.55.
In today’s events Malta will be partecipating in the 4x100m final in the evening. The Malta team will be made up of Jeandre Mallia, Rachid Chouhal, Mario Bonello and Darren Gilford.
