Gynaecology Unit Opened at Gozo Hospital

Malta Independent Saturday, 9 July 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The first gynaecology unit at Gozo General Hospital was opened yesterday by Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono.

The unit is part of an intensive restructuring project in the Maternity ward and doctors’ quarters and cost around Lm80,000.

The restructuring process was carried out by the Gozo Ministry in collaboration with the administration of Gozo General Hospital.

Thanks to this unit, expectant mothers and other patients will be given specialised attention, explained Mrs Debono. The unit can take up to 10 patients – with several single, double and four-bedded rooms available. The unit has a separate entrance but is still directly accessible from the Maternity Ward.

Intensive restructuring has also taken place in the Maternity Ward and the doctors’ quarters during the past few months. The Maternity Ward can take up to 12 patients – it has two admission rooms, two single rooms and others with four beds.

The asbestos soffits have been replaced, as well as the electrical system. Each bed has a network, television and computer port, as well as an electrical nurse call system. There is also an electronic fire alarm system, together with all the medical gases available for each bed.

“Over time, the quality of Gozo General Hospital is becoming even more superior than hospitals of the same size,” said Mrs Debono.

Medical superintendent Anthony Liveri and members of the Gozo General Hospital also attended the press conference.
