UHM Calls on Malta’s leaders to band together for the common good

In light of the agreement reached in parliament to ratify the EU Constitutional Treaty, the Union Haddiema Maghqudin has called on the leaders of Malta’s political parties to pull together in a national effort to counteract the social and economic difficulties the country faces.

In a statement issued yesterday, the UHM claimed that the agreement by the political parties to ratify the EU Constitutional Treaty is a step towards a common foreign policy to be drawn up among all political parties to achieve more credibility among investors in Malta.

The union expressed its satisfaction at the decision to ratify the EU Treaty, since protection from other EU member states will help Malta handle globalisation, the union said.

In view of the fact that prosperous economies are facing difficulties, it is necessary for a small country like Malta to take every opportunity to strengthen faith in the country, attract investment and generate employment while safeguarding social justice, the UHM continued.

The agreement reached in the House of Representatives shows that Malta’s political parties are capable of pulling together for the good of the country above the interest of their individual parties, it said.

The UHM said it would be unfortunate if anyone attempted to gain any political advantage from what had occurred in parliament. “If anything, the Maltese people should be proud that the politicians rose above the partisan politics that had taken over the country,” it said.

If the leaders of Malta unite in a national effort to counteract Malta’s economic and social difficulties, the road ahead will be much clearer, concluded the UHM, adding that this way, Malta can find its way out of its difficulties in a more straightforward manner and achieve success.
